Today’s customer wants a personalized experience in a portable restroom trailer that feels just as — if not more — comfortable than their home. But, what specific features do customers repeatedly request?
To get the lowdown, we spoke with David Harling, CEO of Ameri-Can Engineering. It turns out that consumers ask for restroom trailers that feel like an interior bathroom, down to the fine details. Harling said that these “creature comforts mirror what people might expect when they’re out and about, like at a family restaurant.”
Although family-sized spaces top the list, PROs are taking note of increased requests for premium finishes and luxury options as well. Whether you currently own a restroom trailer or want to purchase a new model, it’s crucial to deliver features that your current and future customers crave.
While once reserved for celebrities and VIPs, more mainstream customers expect upgraded units. Luxury restroom trailers enhance the guest experience with a high-end feel. Harling mentioned that people want a “wow factor” type of experience. He added, “You want bathroom users to exclaim, “That’s nicer than what I’ve got at home!”
When it comes to design, it’s all in the details. Luxury restroom trailers resemble individual suites with plenty of room to move around. Harling said that it’s crucial to use finishes that resemble a “fine hotel as opposed to a Cracker Barrel.” Upgrades on luxury trailers include:
The idea is to make each luxury restroom trailer as color-coordinated and aesthetically pleasing as possible. This extends to the exterior as well. For example, in some regions, customers opt for luxury trailers that resemble log cabins. PROs invest in the total experience by delivering units that look, feel, and function like an interior bathroom.

From temperature-controlled trailers to plenty of outlets for charging devices, consumers expect comfort and convenience. When it comes to customer requests, Harling finds that people want everything “as touchless as possible.” Along with touchless faucets and towel dispensers, you’ll soon see a new range of hands-free toilet options.
Sound packages are another big hit with portable restroom trailer customers. Far from yesterday’s elevator music, customers prefer event-specific playlists. This includes hand-picked songs with personalized messages introducing the music selection and the meaning behind it.
Through constant innovation, portable restroom trailer manufacturers, like Ameri-Can Engineering, continue to add features to meet consumer demands. While the big winner is anything and everything hands-free, there’s been a trend of more requests for green features.
Along with eco-friendly options, shower trailers are becoming more common. These units help with overflow at campgrounds, provide additional sanitation for extended events, and even aid the homeowner during a remodel.
Consumer desire for a home-away-from-home, right down to the portable restroom trailer, isn’t going away. By investing in trailers with flexible space and luxury features, portable restroom operators add value while staying on top of market demand.
