Methanol vs. Salt Brine
Methanol
- Prevents freezing down to -9°F
- Maximum methanol-to-water ratio = approximately 42 oz/gal
- Easy to mix – just pour into the tank
- Non-corrosive and safe for steel
- Flammable and toxic
- More expensive
Salt Brine
- Prevents freezing down to 0°F
- Maximum salt-to-water ratio = 2 lbs/gal
- Mixing takes time – a mixing station is required
- Corrosive to steel
- Safer to handle and use than methanol
- Less expensive
