Winterization Tips for PROs
Placement & Storage
- When possible, place and store portable toilets and sinks in heated or above-freezing structures like a warehouse, garage or shed
- If units must be left outside in freezing conditions, doing these things can help:
- Lock doors to keep them from blowing open
- Place units with doors facing each other
- In larger units, put a 2×4 in the center to prop up the roof during snow accumulation
Portable Toilet Winterization Methods
- Rock salt brine solution – Prevents freezing down to 0°F
- De-icing salt solution/crystal – Prevents freezing down to -26°F
- Methanol – Prevents freezing down to -9°F
- Methanol plus rock salt – Prevents freezing down to -40°F
- De-icing additives – Prevents freezing down to -25°F
- Switch-out or split tank – Enables you to keep the unit in use while taking the tank with the frozen waste back to the shop to thaw

Mixing a Brine Solution: Easy as 1-2-3-4
- Set up your mixing station
- Determine the appropriate salt-to-water ratio
- Mix the solution
- Pump the solution into the truck
