INFOGRAPHIC: An Overview of Mounted Pressure Washers
September 25, 2023Portable Sanitation Issues Following the Burning Man Flood
October 9, 2023Figuring out how to get old decals off portable restroom units is an issue many PROs face. Over time, vinyl stickers with company information need replacing. They get brittle, yellow, or begin to peel. Of course, random vandals also stick unwanted decals to units or add graffiti to existing ones. You may need to remove old decals or residue when purchasing used portable toilets.
It’s a tricky business and never a sure thing. Polyurethane plastic is the material that most porta potties are made of and is meant to be durable. While that’s fantastic for the long term, it’s challenging for sticker removal. We’ve rounded up the best tips and tricks to help you get those pesky decals off your units.
Decal Removal Process for Portable Restroom Units
Always start by peeling off as much of the sticker as possible. This step leaves behind the portion that needs the most assistance. Take your time; removing bigger pieces means less adhesive and mess left behind. Next, use a heat gun or hair dryer to soften the adhesive. Keep your hand moving around the decal, about two to three inches away.
Use a plastic razor blade or scraper to peel the decal off. This may remove some or all of the stickers. You can repeat this process to remove the decal’s top part. A commercial adhesive remover, acetone, or rubbing alcohol can help eliminate the adhesive. Rub it on with a cloth or sponge. Lastly, wash the portable restroom unit with soap and water.
Sticker Removal Tips and Tricks
Now, we wish that the decal removal process worked for every situation. However, commercial vinyl stickers were developed to last a long time in all weather conditions. And some of them test your patience. Fortunately, your porta-potties can handle a bit of rough handling followed by some loving care.
Here are some tips for removing those tough decals:
- Put your heat on high and let the plastic warp slightly before pulling the sticker off. Be careful not to burn the plastic; it will return to its original shape after cooling.
- Let a graffiti remover solution permeate the decal, then use a commercial hot water pressure washer to blast it off the portable restroom unit.
- Go to the source. Ask your decal person for assistance removing and replacing the stickers, as it benefits you both to get it done correctly.

Repairs After Removing Decals
Depending on how large the decals were and how challenging the job was, you may have some clean-up duty or repairs after finishing. Put some pumice powder or sand into your cleaning agent and use a scrubbing brush to remove marks on the restroom walls. This method could leave minor scratches, which you may already have from trying to remove the decal. Return with your torch or heat gun to smooth out the affected areas.
Remember Why Decals Are Worth the Trouble
Although plates are an alternative to decals, vinyl stickers are more customizable and evident to bystanders. With decals, you can display your brand proudly when hauling your units or leaving them at events. Peeling off stickers isn’t fun, but they’re worth the trouble.
