Winterization Tips for PROs

Placement & Storage

  • When possible, place and store portable toilets and sinks in heated or above-freezing structures like a warehouse, garage or shed
  • If units must be left outside in freezing conditions, doing these things can help:
    • Lock doors to keep them from blowing open
    • Place units with doors facing each other
    • In larger units, put a 2×4 in the center to prop up the roof during snow accumulation

Portable Toilet Winterization Methods

  • Rock salt brine solution – Prevents freezing down to 0°F
  • De-icing salt solution/crystal – Prevents freezing down to -26°F
  • Methanol – Prevents freezing down to -9°F
  • Methanol plus rock salt – Prevents freezing down to -40°F
  • De-icing additives – Prevents freezing down to -25°F
  • Switch-out or split tank – Enables you to keep the unit in use while taking the tank with the frozen waste back to the shop to thaw
