“Baptism”: A PRO’s Rite of Passage
What is a baptism?
When a portable restroom operator gets waste spilled or sprayed on them when pumping out a toilet tank or emptying the truck at the dump site.
Who does it happen to?
Typically, new or inexperienced pumpers who haven’t learned everything they should or shouldn’t do. However, even seasoned veterans can have it happen to them due to user error or equipment malfunctions.
What is the reaction?
Unsuspecting victims are usually surprised at first. Ensuing reactions can range from disbelief to anger, although many who have been baptized can’t help but laugh at their misfortune knowing it was bound to happen eventually.
What happens after?
Washing up as soon as possible is ideal. Having access to a shower back at headquarters is even better. Knowing that pumping portable toilets is a dirty job, many PROs keep extra clothes with them in case a wardrobe change is necessary.
Baptism stories from real PROs
“My first week I got sprayed right in the face pumping out my truck! I believe myself to be immune to any disease now!”
“Transfer hose still had waste and air pressure inside, plus I disconnected the hose too fast.”
“Been there done that; had a clog of tampons on the end of the outlet and I manually unclogged it, and I got the blue-brown splash! Shoes and clothes all went into the dumpster.”
“Went to dump and the transfer hose got one of the hinges broken. Everything was going well until the hose disconnected from the truck and all the s**t started coming out fast. Got s**t on me. S**t on the floor. S**t on the truck. S**t everywhere. I smelled like s**t all day long.”
“Been there but dumping the truck with pressure and the hose blew off the truck and a solid stream flew and covered the dump station and covered me too.”
